A tribe of early modern humans live in a synesthetic world, where sounds have
color, colors have sounds. Their consciousness is joined together, one with
another, the tribe with their natural environment. One of them is different.
Hoolow has his own thoughts, thoughts that lead him into conflict with the rest
of the group.
Hoolow’s uniqueness is a mystery to him. He must be alone to unravel it.
During his self-imposed exile, he has fantastic visions brought on by the
ingestion of a psychoactive plant and by sensory deprivation in a dark cave.
His courage and self-reliance is tested. Thinking he has discovered the secret
of his inner “self,” he decides to return to his tribe.
But the tribe Hoolow returns to has changed. A group of adolescents have
evolved individual consciousness in his absence. They are their own society
within the tribe. Hoolow is conflicted – does he align himself with the larger
group or join the youngsters, who are as immature and self absorbed as he
used to be? Will the allure of the youngsters’ new brand of conversation and
their endless innovations in tool making and art turn out to be an irresistible
enticement for Hoolow?
